Wilmington, DE — The Warehouse hosted its “Well Seasoned” event last week, bringing together young people for an immersive celebration of Black History Month through music, food, and art representing cultures across the African Diaspora.
The interactive experience invited youth to explore global black culture through hands-on activities, performances, and culinary tastings that highlighted the richness and diversity of diasporic traditions. Featured dishes included Nigerian jollof rice, Efo Riro (a rich, traditional Yoruba vegetable stew featuring spinach, peppers, onions, and spices), smoked turkey, chicken, goat, and Zobo (Nigerian hibiscus tea), allowing the students to experience cultural foods from across the diaspora.
Students rotated through stations sampling Zobo (Nigerian hibiscus tea), debating their favorite dishes, and discovering music styles that stretched beyond what they hear every day. Laughter filled the room as youth compared flavors, asked questions about cultural traditions, and connected what they were learning to their own heritage and experiences; sparking conversations among students who eagerly shared the traditional meals prepared in their own homes, opening dialogue about family customs, recipes passed down through generations, and how early, many of them began learning domestic responsibilities such as cooking and helping in the kitchen.
“When young people are exposed to different cultures, it broadens their horizons, deepens their knowledge, and equips them to walk into new spaces with confidence and a stronger sense of awareness. Events like Well-Seasoned help our youth connect pride with identity in ways that stay with them long after the night ends.“
